Can you install artificial turf in the fall in Edmonton?

Every September people ask if it is too late. It depends on the ground, not the weather.

The short version: we install turf until the ground stops cooperating, which in Edmonton usually means the back half of October and occasionally into the first week of November. What ends the season is not cold air. It is frost getting far enough into the soil that we cannot excavate or compact properly.

Why frost in the ground is the cutoff

A turf install is mostly earthwork. We strip sod and topsoil, dig to depth, then bring in crushed stone and compact it in layers. Every one of those steps needs soil that behaves like soil.

Once frost is in, the ground digs in chunks instead of cuts, and worse, you cannot compact it properly. A plate compactor riding over half-frozen material gives you a base that reads as solid in November and settles the moment everything thaws in April. That is how you end up with a lawn that has a dip in it after one winter.

So the cutoff is not a date on a calendar. It is a judgement we make on site, and some years it comes two weeks earlier than others.

The argument for going late

A fall install has a bonus. Your yard goes through its first winter right away, so by spring you know it's built right.

A lawn laid in June has ten easy months before its first freeze-thaw cycle. A lawn laid in October goes through a full melt within a few months of being built. If the base was right, nothing happens and you know it. If somebody cut corners, you find out in your first spring rather than your fifth.

The other advantage is that you wake up in April to a green, dry, usable yard instead of six weeks of mud and a crew that cannot start until the ground dries out.

What we will not do late in the season

  • ✓Excavate or compact frozen ground. Not for a discount, not for a deadline.
  • ✓Lay turf over a base we could not compact properly. It is the one part of the job that cannot be corrected later.
  • ✓Seam turf in extreme cold. Adhesives have a working temperature range and the material contracts, so seams set in a hard freeze can open up when it warms.

If you have missed the window

Booking in the fall for a spring install is the better move. You get the site visit and the design done while we have time to think about it, you lock a start date before the spring rush, and we are in your yard in the first workable week of the season rather than in July.

Every year we take fall calls from people who wanted it done that season, and the ones who book for spring are always in their yard earlier than the ones who wait until March to start looking.
